Hi all,
First I want to say thanks to Merrill for his great YouTube vids! I've learned a lot already.
I've been interested in learning metal detecting for a long time (I remember as a kid my sister lost a ring in our backyard and my dad called over a work buddy who was into the hobby and found the ring!)..
Recently my 14 year old has been wanting to learn the hobby so I'm ready to buy our first detector.
I would say 90% of our time is going to be spent on the beach, so I have researched the recommended detectors for beach hunting. I was initially leaning towards the Vanquish series, but I really hate that they take AA batteries - I don't want to have to bring extra batteries and a battery charger along on trips, so I was looking into alternatives with internal LiIon batteries, and that has me thinking about stepping up to the Equinox 700. In addition to the rechargabe battery, I like that it works with (and comes with) wireless headphones, and is fully water resistant, so after a day at the beach I can just hose the whole thing off withtout having to worry about water.
My question is: Will the 700 be too much detector for first timers? I have no problem putting in the work to learn the settings and how to use it, but if the consensus is it may be too complicated (especially for a 14 year old), then maybe we'll reconsider the Vanquish 340 or 440.
Thanks!
Great detector to start with not too hard to learn. If you have a smaller budget there are other detectors that would work well also.
