Underwater detectorists, why all the hand waving? It seems like every underwater metal detecting video I see involves someone waving their hands or kicking their fins to move sand. After 2 decades of detecting underwater in the Caribbean, I'd like to share a tip.
RUBBERMAID COMMERCIAL BAR SCOOP, 32OZ.
Drill 4-5 rows of holes with a 1/4 - 3/8 inch bit at the lowest point in the scoop and you're ready to go.
Scenario:
You're detecting underwater and get a signal
Pinpoint with your coil
Take a scoop, don't dump it
Sweep area
No signal? It's in the scoop. Shake it to see what's in there.
Still a signal from the bottom? Why not take one more scoop?
Still a signal from the bottom?
Move your coil to the far side of your deepening hole
Start fanning the sand/mud/gravel/whatever out of the hole and over your coil
If the target gets swept out, you get a signal
If the target doesn't get swept out, get excited. It's probably not a pull tab or bobby pin.
I guarantee you will be amazed at the volume of material you can move with this technique. Here's the catch, you better wear some weight to counter the thrust from all the fanning. At minimum, fins are a must. I use some flourescent paracord to keep the scoop attached to my wrist, It will be virtually invisible if it drifts away in tropical waters.
Great idea. Thanks for sharing. 👏🏻 👍🏻
Do you have pictures to show this? I can't picture this.
Thank You
