I have access to a bulldozed homestead from what I can tell maybe 1850-1910 in time period and has never been metal detected before me. It has a ton of Iron nails, and other items (Glass, Porcelain and non-ferrous relics.) I would like to share some photos of the more important finds I have recovered from it. I am using two different metal detectors and a pin pointer. I am needing tips on settings or an attack plan to farther my search for the non-ferrous targets the depth is anywhere from 3-8 inches for most non-ferrous finds sometimes deeper but the the items are so spread out it must have been bulldozed. There is a ton of nails and they are masking so much, I have tried to dig them and remove them from holes and so far I am chasing slight chirps on my machines and finding the non-ferrous targets after much searching although fun I've been searching the area for a couple of months now and its very slow. A forest has grown over the location so many roots but the soil is sandy.
Location:
East Texas piney woods.
Equipment:
Minelab X-Terra Pro
Nokta Legend
Minelab pro-find 40.
Notable finds:
Wagon parts. (Axels, Springs, Wrench) ect.
Old padlocks.
UMC. CO. Shotgun shells.
Musket Balls
UMC CO. Bullet casings (And one intact .38 Shell with bullet)
KMI (Kentuckey Military Institute) CADET Staff button (Gold finish)
Warranted superior Handsaw stamp(?)
Pocket watch (Patent date 1888)
10k Gold broach from a womans dress. (Best guess)
Musket rifle trigger grouping.
Various other brass and copper things, Lamp items and candle holders and a cane tip.
Glass of old bottles that do not appear modern,
(There is NO aluminum in the entire area)
My problem. Iron. It's like IRON man came down and exploded and he was wearing a suit made of iron stove parts wagon parts and nails.
NAILS, NAILS, NAILS,
NAILS.!!! NAIL NAIL NAIL!!!! (and other iron items that are larger and easy to remove...but the iron is masking everything.
I have tried everything from turning the iron filter down to zero on the legend to let the non-ferrous targets become more dominate to simply removing all of the iron in my hole where I get a slight chirp for a higher rated signal ID. in the end I am digging all of it... there must be a better way.
Pictures to follow.
It may seem like a few neat items and indeed I am happy to have found them however, This is a couple months (or more) of off time and family sacrificed time (as the family has little interest in metal detecting at all) to find these items. Is there a better way to see though this iron???
Thank you for your time and advice on what to do. I know there's old coins out in this mess somewhere. I just can't see them because I put a couple rusty nails next to a copper penny and test it and the iron nails almost completely mask my copper penny in test situations.
I'll post a few more pictures if anyone is interested or just because its late tonight and I wanna share some of these finds anyway.
Best regards,
Oscarking850.
I'm not familiar with the detectors you're using. Are either capable of notching?
I've currently got an issue with some large buried iron masking whatever else may be down there, so I'm going to try notching it out.
