- Ask Merrill & Friends!Hello Merrill, I'm taking my son to beaches in Galveston this weekend to hunt with the Manticore. I watched all you videos and wanted to ask what app you use to draw those pink tracks and leave gold dots where you dig targets. I'd love to download it before we start. thanks! ps I'll be starting a new job near Tom's river NJ. Would love to meet up and hunt one day in NY. I'm not a youtuber, just a fan.Like
- General Discussion: DetectorsGreetings all, I wanted to let everyone know about a nice deal I came across on Minelab’s website that’s running this month from 1/1/25 - 1/30/25. I recently joined the Forum as I’m jumping back into detecting after being on hiatus for the last couple of years. I’ve owned a lot of detectors since I started detecting 57 years ago, but for the last 10 years, I’ve been swinging a Minelab Sovereign Elite primarily on beaches, but I also love coin shooting old houses, churches, old parks, etc. Since my Sovereign is older technology, bulky, and requires more set up time to get going, I figured it was time for an upgrade. With the Sovereign, I’m hunting audio-only, no bells, whistles or screens, so I basically just set the threshold, start swinging and listen for the tones to infer. The Sovereign is Multi-Frequency and If I recall, it sends out something like 18 or 19 frequencies simultaneously, so there’s different tones to infer. But now, I’m older and want a lighter detector, more features, more up-to-date technology, waterproof, a detector I can grab and go AND wireless. I started looking at the Manticore & Equinox 700 and recently added the X-Terra Elite to my list. I posted the other day about the Equinox 700 & X-Terra Elite, wondering if they’re both the same detector. If you compare the spec sheets of both, the specs are identical. The Nox does have a graphite shaft, and I’m probably missing a minor feature difference or two, but overall, they both have Multi-IQ and the specs look identical to my eyes. I know the Manticore has a lot more features and might give me an extra ½”- 1” of depth or so, but lemme tell ya, on the beach, I’ve frequently dug ½ way to China with my Sovereign and 12x10 SEF to get targets, so any minor depth differences really don’t matter much to me when I’m beach searching. I have a pretty good feeling that any one of these detectors will make me break out the Icy Hot for my arms, lol. So, I decided I’d get both the Equinox 700 & X-Terra Elite, as I always like to have a 2nd detector as a backup or for the wife or guests to use. My original plan was to get the Equinox 700 first, then pick up the X-Terra Elite a few months down the road. But a visit to the Minelab website this morning changed that plan, and I’ll be picking up the X-Terra Elite first, as Minelab currently has a promotion running on the X-Terra’s this month that I just couldn’t pass up. An X-Terra Elite by itself lists for $479.00, but at that price, you get just the detector w/11” coil. Apparently, it doesn’t come with headphones, as they’re not listed as an included accessory, so getting wireless headphones would be an additional expense, which would then increase the overall cost. That said, if you do buy just the detector during the promotion, Minelab will include a free Pro-Find 40 pinpointer ($149.00), which I had planned to buy anyway, so you still get a deal. I’ve been using a Garrett pinpointer for years, but the Minelab Pro-Find 40 looks to be a much better pinpointer, and hey, I’m upgrading after all, lol. But then, I saw the promotion for the X-Terra Expedition Pack ($599.00), and IMHO, this is THE deal to get and is the package that I ordered. With the Expedition Pack, you get the X-Terra detector with included 11” coil ($479.00). But you also get an 8” Double-D Elliptical Coil with Skidplate ($125.00), the free Pro-Find 40 pinpointer ($149.00), AND ML 85 Wireless Headphones ($125.00), for a total value of $878.00. If you bought just the X-Terra at $479.00 and also bought the ML 85 wireless headphones at $125.00, you’d wind up spending $5.00 more than the cost of the Expedition Pack and wouldn’t get the extra 8” coil. Buying the X-Terra Elite either way will still get you a free Pro-Find 40 pinpointer ($149.00), but the Expedition pack is the way to go IMO as you’ll get everything included in that package, along with the free Pro-Find 40 pinpointer to boot! I also ordered a Minelab case while I was at it. I have a Minelab case for my Sovereign, but I think a new detector deserves a new case, so I figured I may as well add it to the order. If you’re in the market for an X-Terra, or even if you’ve been looking at the Nox’s but want to save hundreds of $, go to Minelab’s website, the X-Terra Elite promotion should be the first thing you see when you land on the site.Like
